The largest portion of our country’s population, the Baby Boomers, are struggling with losing their jobs of many years, looking for new jobs and wondering if they will ever be able to “retire” as the country goes through the worst economic times since the Great Depression. Thousands of these displaced Boomers are finding that perhaps they don’t just want to return to a job similar to what they had, but one that will actually make them happy during the remaining work years.

During the previous decades of their lives, many Boomers worked at careers that they more or less “fell into” and provided for the family security but didn’t make them happy. They often, in fact, hated their jobs but as the pay was good and they already had many years invested, they did their best to find happiness anywhere other than their job.

The current situation of the economy has either provided everyone with a general feeling of panic or, on the other had, one of great excitement and opportunity! The time is right to do some heart-felt soul searching.

There is a great resource to help with this soul searching that also provides advice on career planning and that is personal coaching.

Here is an excellent book that has some great ways to help you begin your self re-evaluation. The book is called “The Reach Out Approach” by Steve Gavatorta, owner and founder of the Gavatorta Group, Inc. and former Pittsburgh native. Steve walked away from his 19-year career in the consumer packaged goods industry to follow his dream of teaching others about effective communication.

Steve’s company offers a down-to-earth, easy to understand personal coaching method that brings basic human core values to the surface and enables you to find what career directions will not only provide income but fulfill that need to do something that “matters” to your inner-self. The website has many free links to career resources as well as newsletters, daily motivational emails and much more.

Breaking Through the Clutter: Reach Out Approach Communication

The 21st Century has brought a pounding clutter of communication that creates a dissonant white noise and imposes barriers. Overcoming these barriers requires an intentional effort to maximize connection, meaning and retention. The key to breaking through the clutter is to become a dynamic communicator.

Dynamic communicators have the ability to tailor their message style and delivery to that of their audience to transform one-way monologues to two-way dialogues. Aligning your communication style and delivery to your listeners creates both understanding and retention for your desired results.

Think about it, if you are a very extroverted, talkative, gregarious person communicating someone who is quiet, introverted and reserved, is there a chance that your communication style would clash with theirs? Absolutely! As a dynamic communicator, you would realize this, tone down your approach to better connect with that person. This approach would hold true for any of the multiple communication styles that exist. The problem is that most people come from their point of view in how to communicate and don’t respond accordingly to others.

As you approach your “listeners” – whether it be a physician and their office personnel or a Santarus colleague – it is imperative to realize that they are each unique. The way they deliver and receive information is unique to them. The key for you as a dynamic communicator is to realize this point, learn about their style, and adapt yours to create the connection you desire. Once you’ve created that connection, you effectively differentiated yourself from others to achieve enduring positive results.

So as you communicate with others today, take the time to listen and learn about them, read their needs, wants, communication style and satisfy those needs through an adapted approach – do that and you will begin mastering the art of dynamic communication.
